On warm days, bi-folds can create a generous opening for entertaining and garden access. For the rest of the year, the closed doors still need to feel comfortable, secure and easy to operate.
Threshold design needs particular care. Accessibility aspirations, external levels, drainage and exposure must be considered together, because a low visual step does not remove the need to manage water correctly.

Frequently asked questions
How much do new bi-fold doors cost, supplied and fitted?
Bi-fold door prices are subject to survey, based on the opening and panel layout. Overall size, frame material, glass, finish, hardware and threshold affect the price. Fitting into an existing suitable opening is a different scope from creating a new or wider opening. Your quotation should distinguish the doors and installation from any structural or building work required.
Are bi-fold or sliding doors better for a kitchen extension?
Choose bi-folds if opening much of the doorway to the garden is your priority and you have room for the folded panels. Sliding doors are useful where furniture or a small patio makes swinging panels inconvenient. They can also favour larger uninterrupted panes when closed. Compare the actual layouts, views and clear opening for your extension.
Can I use bi-fold doors without opening all the panels?
Some layouts include a traffic door: one hinged panel used for everyday access without folding the full set. This is useful when the doors are your regular route into the garden. It is not available in every configuration, so decide the everyday access position before the panel arrangement is finalised.
How much space do bi-fold doors need when they are open?
Allow for the panels to swing and form a stack at the chosen side or sides. The space required depends on panel width, number and folding direction. Furniture, patio seating, steps and paths can all affect the layout. Check the proposed open position on a plan as well as looking at the closed doors.
Can bi-fold doors have a low or flush threshold?
A reduced step may be possible with a suitable system and floor arrangement. The threshold still needs to manage water, so outside levels, drainage and exposure must be planned together. If step-free access is a priority, raise it at the start so the door and building details can be assessed together.
Will bi-fold doors make my extension cold in winter?
Bi-folds can form part of a well-insulated extension, but warmth depends on the glass, frames, seals, threshold and installation. A large glazed area needs careful specification. Compare the thermal performance of the complete doors and consider the rest of the room, rather than assume that every bi-fold design performs the same way.
Are bi-fold doors secure when closed?
Security depends on the complete folding-door system, including the main access lock, panel locking points, hinges, glazing and frame fixing. Ask which security features and test evidence apply to the layout you are ordering. A brochure claim for another configuration does not establish the performance of your doors.
